Super Knights
Date: Friday, February 07, 2003
By: Mohammed Safi
Region: EG

EgyptianSoccer.com - Zamalek have completed a historic treble, winning the African Super Cup for the third time, thus keeping the cup for life. The White Knights came out 3-1 victors in an all North African derby cup clash against Morocco's Wydad Casablanca.

First half

The game kicked off as a typical North African clash, with the tension in the air almost tangiable. Both teams traded early posession, with Wydad's counter attacking game looking quite sharp from the start. Zamalek's defence on the other hand, looked terribly shaken, and lost an excessive amount of balls. Allali sent a rasping shot towards Abdelwahed El Sayed, requiring a finger-tip save on 14 minutes.

Traded posession was brought to an end on 28 minutes when Ahmed Saleh nicked a witty through pass to Abdelwahed. The Olympic international made room for himself without touching the ball, with his first touch being powerful enough to send it zipping past Wydad keeper; El Jarmouni. The goal set the 60,000 plus Zamalek faithfuls on fire, with the Whites attempting and succeeding in absorbing the instant Wydad pressure that came after the goal.

Zamalek's bookings came increasingly alarming, as all of Bechir, El Kabbani, Hamza and Tamer Abdelhamid earned themselves halftime bookings. The Wydad counters were always looking dangerous, as the Moroccans were displaying great ball control and passing. Emam, typically impressive as ever, was instrumental in leading numerous Zamalek counters, and was involved in lots of midfield interception, but similarly typical was the harsh Moroccan marking. Abdelahalim Aly should have put Zamalek two goals up a minute from the halftime mark, when an Emam through pass finds him advancingly umarked. Aly took his time with the shot, and sent it disappointingly wide.

Second half

Zamalek looked to have been instructed to resort to their typical one touch counter attacking football, as they began the second half in relative zone defensive mode, and waited for the slightest chances to come up. Their plans proved fruitful as almost 15 minutes from the restart, a great passing play is shown by Zamalek, who manage to flip the play accross the pitch. Ahmed Saleh let Abdelhalim Aly loose down the right with a sizzling through pass. Aly, who had squandered numerous attempts in the first half, redeemed himself by sending a cutting square ball to Emam, who had already beaten the keeper, but managed to fake a Wydad defender for extra measure, before blasting the ball into the empty net.

Zamalek's euphoria could not have been boosted any better way, as a sinlge minute after the goal, El Jarmouni was forced to kick a back pass away from a rapidly approaching Abdelhalim. The ball fell at Hamza's feet, who selflessly passed it back to Aly, who shook off three Wydad defenders before placing the ball past a red faced Jarmouni. Inevitably, the Cairo Stadium stands erupted volcanically, celebrating two goals in two minutes.

The Whites though, relaxed significatly after the third goal, with their win seemingly inevitable, and paid the price. Almost ten minutes from time, the Moroccans manage to pull one back through Ivorian substitute, Gah Zadi. El Areef's shot found him with his back towards El Sayed's goal. The striker turned well and sent an easy shot post a furious Abdelwahed. Wydad try to mount up the pressure, with Zamalek's counter breaks looking dangerous as well. Both teams played out a tense final ten minutes, before Tunisian referee, Hicham Keirat, let off his final whistle, announcing Zamalek as the 2003 African Super Cup champions.

Final Whistle

The scoreline does not necessarily represent the game's proceedings. Wydad were no easy foe for Zamalek, with both teams' shots on goal amounting to almost the same. Zamalek's finishing though, gave them the upper edge, as they continue to play attractive open football. Hazem Emam brilliantly led his midfield line-up despite a bandaged knee, with his fellow midfielders; Mohammed Abdelwahed, Tarek El Sayed and Ahmed Saleh all providing exceptional performances as well. Tamer Abdelhamid locked out the Wydad front line well, while Zamalek's backline, failed to impress at the start of the game, but could only rise in their level of play.

Both coaches played their cards well, with Capral not fearful of defending amidst his home fans. El Jarmouni's tense clearence led to the final turning point in the game, as things still looked evenly balanced at 2-0. Wydad's Oscar Fullone failed to find proper marking for Hamza, and did not have the ballistic capabilities of Mohammed Abdelwahed in check either.

Finally, the Whites can be proud of their African conquests this season, as they have beyond doubt proved themselves to be Africa's best squad at the moment.
